History of Adult Education in Muncie: A Video Presentation by Luther Prater

Hi!

I did something a bit different. By searching old newspaper articles, I was able to chronicle a comprehensive history of adult education in Muncie, Indiana. Please feel free to let me know if it is informative and what I can do to improve it.

You will have to pause the video because it goes too fast.

Thanks and have a wonderful day!

  1. This was a fantastic video and topic! I enjoyed reading the articles from the time period and learning even more about Muncie. This video was also a great way to engage younger learners, as many have grown up in an era in which video is more appealing than simply reading a paper or an article. The information you found on adult educational opportunities in Muncie were fascinating. While much in Muncie can be attributed to the Ball family, it was interesting to learn what people thought was important in regard to adult education. Most people usually associate the Ball family with the university and not the YMCA. I do not know if you plan to continue with this topic, but have you checked into The Center for Middletown Studies, here at BSU? Muncie has long been considered "Middletown, U.S.A." and the center collects data on Muncie and everyday life. It would be interesting to see what they have on the subject of adult education in Muncie throughout the years.

  2. Luther,
Thank you for your hard work on this paper! It is great learning about adult education at a local level. Often times when learning about topics throughout my college career I would be interested to know how the impact of the city or state because it is so much more relevant, and often makes it easier to understand. As Rachel mentioned, it is almost insane to think of the impact the Ball family has had on Muncie. I wonder what the city would look like had they never invested in the way they did. I truly enjoyed watching the video and seeing the old newspaper clippings. What a creative way to share your thoughts. Your commentary was very useful in helping me understand the local resources that are currently available. My younger sister, who is 21 and never completed high school will be moving in with me in the coming months and I will definitely check out some of the resources you mentioned to help her get into some sort of adult learning program. Thank you for your work.
